- Now Noelle took out the carrots, all five of them, and looked at her snow creations. Then she looked up. The sky above her was ablaze with stars, far brighter than she had ever seen them before. That should not have been possible. Though in a park, Noelle was still right next to the campus of a large university in a major city, the light pollution should have been far too high to see much of anything. But the lights of the city seemed to have been dimmed, and the lights of heaven above her shone with a new and bold brilliance that struck awe into her.
- Noelle looked up at the majesty of the stars, marveling at the wonder for several minutes. The moment felt magical somewhat, and she was reminded of the old woman's words. Something about this being a special day, something about spirits and veils and powers. It was the winter solstice, the darkest day of the year. She herself didn't go for much of it, but Noelle had friends that liked horoscopes, neopagan rituals, and a few that were even full and earnest wiccans. They spoke of the solstice with reverence. It was a day of import and magic, and most importantly it was a turning point. Noelle hoped that it wasn't a turn towards more tragedy for her.
- Feeling the weight of all the symbolic importance of the day, and the weight of the oddly bright stars looking down at her, Noelle took the carrots in her hand and moved to the first snowman she had created. She lifted a carrot up, ready to put the vegetable in its face, but paused and reconsidered.
